If there is one thing that’s in the least concern of teens nowadays, that is hypertension. Having a high blood pressure is not really in their priority unless they start to experience its symptoms. Being hypertensive as early as your teen years poses a great threat to your life in the long run.
As your heart pumps, your blood exerts pressure against your blood vessel walls. This is referred to as blood pressure. The normal blood pressure in adults is 110/80. Several factors affect the changes in your blood pressure such as temperature, diet, medications, activity and even rest.
Hypertension may seem like a condition for old people in general but even teens and babies can experience it. If a teen’s blood pressure reads 120/80, it is still considered normal. If it reaches 120/139 systolic pressure or 80/89 diastolic pressure, then it has to be monitored already. A reading of 140/90 is already considered high blood pressure for teens 18 years old and above.
There is no cause for hypertension. Teens who are prone to getting the condition include those who have a family history of high blood pressure, those who are obese, those who lack exercise and teens who drink a lot of alcohol and even those who take drugs.
There are several ways to prevent your kids from getting hypertension. First, maintain a healthy weight. This is the time when teens are more likely to favor junk foods, sodas, and alcohol for the more healthy food. Make sure your children are getting the right nourishment to prevent them from getting sick. Second, exercise regularly. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. Reduce salt intake. Avoid smoking and drinking alcohol. Have your blood pressure checked regularly. If you are already diagnosed with hypertension, make sure you follow your doctor’s orders when it comes to medication, diet and other health concerns.
According to a report in the American Heart Journal Association, it was said that teens who do not have enough sleep are more prone to developing hypertension and other health problems. This is why it is advisable for teens and adults as well to get as much as 8 hours of sleep every day. Avoiding meals is a big no-no. Eating a hearty breakfast will help you stay alert throughout the day. Having a healthy and balanced diet can also help your body perform its functions at its best. Also, do not forget to drink 8-12 glasses of water a day.
